What you'll learn

  • Identify phishing attempts
  • Use stronger account-security habits

Identity theft happens when someone uses another person's information without permission. Account security habits reduce the chance that financial accounts, email, or personal data are misused.

Protective habits

  • Use strong, unique passwords.
  • Consider using a reputable password manager to create and securely store strong, unique passwords.
  • Turn on multi-factor authentication where available.
  • Be cautious with links and attachments.
  • Review account activity and statements.
  • Limit how much personal information is shared publicly.

Email security matters

Email is often used to reset passwords. Protecting email access helps protect other accounts too.

Example

If a bank text asks for a password, that is suspicious. Financial institutions generally do not need your password sent by text or email.
