What you'll learn
- Identify needs and wants
- Compare short-term and long-term decisions
A need is something important for basic living, safety, health, or required obligations. A want is optional. Wants are not bad, but separating them from needs helps you make tradeoffs with more intention.
Goals make tradeoffs clearer
- Short-term goals might be next month's bill, a repair, or a small purchase.
- Long-term goals might include education, retirement, a home, or financial flexibility.
- A goal becomes more useful when it has a purpose, an amount, and a time horizon.
Context matters
The same item can be a need in one situation and a want in another. Transportation may be necessary for work; a more expensive option may be optional.
Example
Buying lunch out may be convenient, but packing lunch twice a week could support a savings goal without eliminating every enjoyable purchase.
